Dun-Duns

Dun-Duns also known as Dununs are traditional double sized bass drums. These are two or three separate drums played with large sticks. Dun Duns are the traditional additions to the Djembe in West African music. These drums are cylindrically shaped and cow skin is attached to both sides which provides rhythmic and musical base. Kenken commonly identified as bells are mounted on the top of the drum.

Dun Duns are placed horizontally and the person plays it by striking the drum with a stick in one hand and with the second hand he hits a bell with a metal piece. These can be placed vertically also in some circumstances. In this case a person plays it with two sticks. Dun Duns are of three different sizes; Dunumba is the largest, Sangban is the middle and Kenkeni is the smallest.

Sangban and Dunumba will hold the maximum power in the drum circle. These drums can be played with padded mallets or wooden sticks. The wood used in Dun Duns is much lighter and softer compared to Djembes. Mainly two tones can be played, a closed tone or an open tone. Usually cow skin is used, but in some countries deer or moose skin can be used.

Dun Duns are container shaped bass drums and these usually go along with Djembe. Dunun drums are skinned roulette with heavy cow skin on both ends. And like in djembe, rope tuning is used in this instrument. With increasing popularity of drumming programs, demand for Dun Duns has also been increased. Rhythm works guarantees the best drumming instruments in the market.
